A deposit bonus gives you something extra for funding your account: matched bonus funds, spins, or both. The headline percentage matters far less than three numbers in the terms, which are the qualifying deposit, what the wagering applies to, and the cap on how much can become cash.

Deposit bonuses are where the real money in promotions sits. A no deposit offer is a handshake; a deposit offer is the actual proposition, and it is the one worth reading carefully, because you are putting your own money in to get it.
They come in more shapes than people expect, and the differences between those shapes matter more than the percentage on the banner.
The shapes
| Type | What it does |
| Percentage match | Bonus funds worth a share of the deposit, up to a cap. The cap governs everything above the efficient deposit. |
| Fixed spins on deposit | A set number of spins on named games, credited at once or drip-fed daily. |
| Match plus spins | The standard welcome package, where each half often carries its own terms. |
| Deposit and spend | The reward lands after you have staked the qualifying amount, not when you pay it in. The money is at risk first. |
| Prize wheel on deposit | A randomised match, where the advertised maximum is the rarest outcome on the wheel. |
| Cashback | A rebate on losses over a period. Worth the most of any of these when paid as cash. |
Find your deposit before you read a single headline
Every match has two limits: the percentage, which governs small deposits, and the cap, which governs large ones. The deposit that lands exactly on the cap is the efficient one, and it is usually much lower than the advertising implies.
100% up to £200, at three deposits
Deposit £10: bonus £10.
Deposit £50: bonus £50.
Deposit £200: bonus £200, the cap reached.
Decide what you were going to deposit, then compare every offer at that number. A 50% match with a low requirement can beat a 200% one if you were only ever putting in £20.
What the wagering applies to
Since 19 January 2026 requirements have been capped at 10 times the bonus, and incentives can no longer require two different types of gambling. That has moved the important question from how big the multiplier is to what it is calculated on.
Applied to the bonus alone, a £50 bonus at 10x needs £500 of qualifying stakes. Applied to deposit plus bonus after a £50 deposit, it needs £1,000. Same headline, twice the work, and the terms will say which.
Then game weighting decides the pace: slots normally count in full, while table games, video poker and live dealer games often count at a reduced rate or not at all.
The ceiling, and why it beats the headline
Maximum conversion limits how much bonus money can ever become cash. It is the number that separates an offer that can pay from one that is mostly decoration, and it is the first thing to compare when two offers look similar.
A large bonus with a tight conversion cap is smaller than a modest bonus with none. That single comparison will re-rank most offer pages you read, including this one.
Your deposit remains yours throughout
Operators must let you withdraw your deposit balance at any time, including while a bonus is pending or active, and must display deposit and bonus balances separately. A wagering requirement can only apply to bonus funds, never to money you paid in, and terms instructing you to stake your own deposit before withdrawing it are not permitted.
Withdrawing while a bonus is live normally forfeits the bonus, so it is a choice rather than a free option, but the choice is always available to you. If you would rather take no bonus at all, most sites let you decline, and on a non-sticky structure you can often cancel before the bonus funds are used.
Reading an offer properly
1
Fix the deposit
Your number, not the advertised cap. Read every offer at it.
2
Requirement and basis
The multiplier, and whether it covers the deposit as well as the bonus.
3
Conversion cap
The most it can ever pay in cash. Compare this before the percentage.
4
Max bet, excluded games, expiry
The three terms that most often void a bonus or run the clock out on it.
Significant conditions must be shown clearly and prominently wherever an offer is advertised, with the full terms one click away, and an offer cannot be called free where your own money is at risk to qualify. Every listing here states its significant terms.
When no bonus is the better deal
A bonus is a commitment to play a certain amount. If you intend to deposit £20, play a few rounds and withdraw whatever is left, a bonus makes that harder rather than easier, because the balance becomes entangled with a requirement.
Plenty of players are better off declining, or choosing sites whose offers pay in cash. Taking a bonus only because it is offered is the most common avoidable mistake on this page. If you are specifically after offers that need no deposit at all, our no deposit bonus page covers those separately.
What voids a bonus, and how to avoid it
Bonuses are forfeited more often than people realise, almost always for one of a short list of reasons. None of them is obscure, and all of them are avoidable.
| Cause | How to avoid it |
| Exceeding the maximum bet | Check the limit, often a few pounds per spin or hand, and keep below it for as long as any bonus funds are live. This is the most common cause by a distance. |
| Playing excluded games | Read the excluded list before you start, not after. Jackpot slots and live tables are the usual entries. |
| Withdrawing mid-requirement | Taking your deposit balance out normally forfeits the bonus, which is a legitimate choice as long as you make it knowingly. |
| Multiple accounts | One per person, household, device and payment method. Duplicate accounts are closed and bonuses removed. |
| Mismatched payment details | The payment method must be in your own name and verified, or a payout will be stopped even where nothing else is wrong. |
| Letting the clock run out | Expiry is measured from crediting rather than registration, and unfinished progress is not carried over. |
If a bonus is voided you keep your own deposit balance, since a wagering requirement can only ever apply to bonus funds. What disappears is the bonus and anything won with it, which is why the maximum bet rule is worth reading twice.
Playing safely
Deposit offers work by getting more into play than you planned, and the play-through keeps it there. Decide your limit before you claim, set a deposit limit in the cashier at the same time, and treat bonus funds as money at risk rather than money you own.
