Gala Casino

Gala Casino

3/5Expert Review

A familiar name with a large lobby and a well-run rewards programme, but nothing at all on the table for a brand new player.

Gala is one of the most recognisable gambling names in Britain, and almost all of that recognition belongs to something this site is not. The high street bingo clubs were sold and rebranded years ago while the name went on to a different owner, so the casino shares a brand with the halls people remember and very little else.

It is operated by LC International Limited, company number 46808, of Suite 6, Atlantic Suites, Gibraltar, licensed in Great Britain by the Gambling Commission under account 54743 and by the Government of Gibraltar under licences 010 and 012. If you join, that is the name that appears on your bank statement rather than the one above the door.

Welcome Offer

There is not one. At the time of writing the site's offers page lists 5 promotions and every one of them is for existing customers. A new player signing up today gets nothing for doing so.

That is worth saying plainly, because it is unusual for a brand this size, and it is the first thing anyone comparing casinos should know about this one.

If you are choosing a casino on the strength of its opening offer, this is not currently a contender. If you are choosing one you expect to use for a year, read on, because the ongoing side is better than the front door suggests.

Promotions

What exists is aimed squarely at regulars, and the thresholds are high.

The Weekend Reward gives 25 free spins at 10p each, valid 7 days, for opting in and spending £50 or more on selected slots between Friday and Sunday. That is £2.50 of spin value for £50 of stake.

The Guaranteed Rewards Wheel pays a cash prize of between 50p and £50 for spending £20 or more on slots in a day, with Slingo and live games excluded. It is guaranteed, which is more than most wheels manage, but the floor is 50p.

Live Casino Rewards gives a £10 live casino bonus for depositing and spending £100 on live games in a week, with 1x playthrough, a £2 maximum stake and 7 days to use it. One per player per week.

Alongside those sit Drops and Wins, the Pragmatic Play network promotion with a £350,000 weekly prize pool paying free spins or bet multipliers, and free daily slots tournaments with cash prizes between 50p and £5. The tournaments are the best thing on the list: they cost nothing, and I have always liked a leaderboard that pays out in real money rather than bonus credit.

Games

The lobby is the strongest part of the site. It is sorted into slots, new releases, exclusives, roulette, blackjack, live tables, jackpot slots, Megaways and Slingo, and the sorting actually works, which matters more than people give it credit for.

The supply runs across the major studios, so the arcade standards are here alongside the current releases: Rainbow Riches, Cleopatra, Leprechaun's Luck, Cops 'n' Robbers and King Kong Cash on one side, and a steady flow of new games on the other. There is a proper exclusives section too, with titles like Emmerdale Moo-Dunnit, Joker Fortunes, Feed the Fish, Bees 'n' Honey and Rich Sharky 2 that you will not find in every other lobby.

The live casino is large, covering tables and game shows, and there are mobile apps as well as browser play. What I would still like is more ways to filter: searching by mechanic or feature rather than by category would make a lobby this size far easier to navigate.

Depositing and Withdrawing

The terms list cards, bank transfer, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and Paysafecard. Credit cards and company cards cannot be used, which is the law here rather than a house rule.

Withdrawals run on a closed loop: the operator pays you back by the method you deposited with wherever it can, splitting a payout across several methods if it has to. So the method you choose first is the method you are likely stuck with, and it is worth choosing with the withdrawal in mind rather than the deposit.

One term deserves more attention than it gets. An account left unused for 13 consecutive months is classed as inactive, and after 30 days' notice a £3 monthly administration fee comes out of the balance until the account is used again or the money runs out. If you join, play once and forget about it with £20 sitting there, that balance will be gone inside a year.

Customer Support

Support runs through a help centre and a contact page, backed by the scale of a very large operator. The safer gambling tools are the full set, with deposit limits, time limits and self-exclusion available from the account area rather than buried.

I have never had a problem here that needed escalating, which is the most useful thing I can tell you about any support team.

Review Summary

I have no nostalgic attachment to this brand. I never set foot in one of the halls, and my first experience of the casino came from reviewing it, after which it earned a bookmark and regular visits. The lobby is good, the free tournaments are genuinely good, and the operator behind it is about as established as they come.

Three stars, down from the 5 this review used to carry, and the reasons are specific. There is no welcome offer at all for a new player. The rewards that do exist want £20, £50 or £100 of spend before they pay anything, and the smallest of them pays 50p. And a dormant account is charged £3 a month, which is a fee for forgetting rather than for playing.

None of that makes it a bad casino. It makes it a casino to join when you already know you want to play here, rather than one to join for what it gives you on the way in.

  • Real Exclusive Titles
