Bingo Caller told by council not to say 'Two Fat Ladies'
A member of the Sudbury Town Council has urged bingo callers not to use some of the traditional bingo calling terms: "two fat ladies 88" and "Legs 11". The council claimed that these terms are politically incorrect. Bingo callers might find themselves facing a lawsuit.
John Sayer, who operates regular bingo games in Sudbury for charity purposes said that he was approached by the council's clerk, he was advised to stop using "two fat ladies 88" and "Legs 11" as their bingo terms. The Sudbury council perceive the terms as "politically incorrect".
Some critics said that the term might be offensive to some bingo players who are not physically fit. On the other hand, the two terms are a solid part of the bingo tradition. Players are used to these terms. Players go to a bingo house to have some fun and these terms are just part of the package.
Currently, the council did not receive any complaints, but a Facebook group is in place to campaign for the comical and traditional calls to be kept in place. Bingo callers said that these terms are part of the bingo language and players actually find them fun. The Councils reaction to some is unjustified.
However, the 75 year old member of the Town Council and former town mayor thinks that this overreaction is her way of protecting bingo operators from a possible lawsuit.
We all have different opinions on things but a bingo game would not be as much fun as it is without these comic calls right? It's fun, yes, but the council only wants what’s best for everyone.
